Degrees Requirement

Major: Philosophy majors must fulfill all of the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences listed in the Texas Tech University Undergraduate Catalog. Students majoring in philosophy must complete 30 hours in philosophy, including PHIL(Logic), (Introduction to Ethics), (Classical Greek Philosophy), (Modern European Philosophy), and either (Epistemology) or (Metaphysics). Majors may not count PHIL (Reasoning) toward fulfillment of the 30-hour requirement, but they may substitute PHIL (Advanced Logic) for the requirement.

Minor: A minor in philosophy requires the completion of 18 hours in philosophy, 6 of which must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.
For transfer students, at least 9 hours of the major or 6 hours of the minor must be completed in residency at Texas Tech. Philosophy students must receive at least a 'C' in any philosophy course in order for it to fulfill major or minor requirements.
It is not unusual for students to combine a major in philosophy with a second major in another field. To complete a double major, a student must satisfy all of the requirements of both disciplines.

Master's degree in philosophy:

Those who wish to pursue an advanced degree in other disciplines or professions will find that the philosophy M.A. program provides an excellent springboard. The philosophy M.A. program at Texas Tech University is also designed to provide a solid grounding for continuing toward a Ph.D. in philosophy. Students lacking an undergraduate degree in philosophy, for example, might use the philosophy M.A. to improve their credentials, fill in gaps in their fund of knowledge, polish their writing skills, increase their intellectual competence and confidence, and generally prepare themselves for entrance into a philosophy Ph.D. program. For students who are uncertain about their future plans, the philosophy M.A. program provides an chance to test one's ability to do philosophy graduate work without the extensive commitment of time and resources required by a Ph.D. program. Finally, students pursuing philosophy as an end in itself, seeking to further their understandings of the foundations of human knowledge and values, will find the philosophy M.A. program to be self-contained, providing depth as well as breadth in philosophy.

Many students who graduate from Texas Tech with an M.A. in philosophy go on to Ph.D. programs and professional schools. In recent years, these students have entered Ph.D. programs in philosophy at Duke University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Ohio State University, and University of New Mexico, and in sociology at Texas A&M (note that most of these students received multiple offers); students recently awarded Tech philosophy M.A.'s have also been admitted to the law schools at University of Texas and Catholic University of America. This year's applicants to Ph.D. programs in philosophy are doing particularly well; at least three students have been admitted, with funding, to excellent programs, including those at Cornell, Ohio State, and Florida State.
